The “diet” is so 90s

 

A new client recently told me about her frustration with dieting.

She would start off each day the same: a bowl of steel-cut oatmeal with fresh strawberries, water with fresh squeezed lemons. Then she would have hot tea as her mid-morning snack. For lunch: a diet shake and a salad.

(You see where I’m going with this, right?)

By afternoon, she was ready to eat anything in sight. And she did. Cookies from the lunchroom, soda from the snack machine, some stale M&Ms from the bottom of her purse that her daughter had dumped there . . .

It was a downhill spiral from there.

You know what I told her? “Diets are so 90s.”

So many people get out of bed with the best intentions and get back in bed angry with themselves. They feel like they have failed. Why? Because they are looking at weight loss as a diet instead of a lifestyle change.

Sacrifice SUCKS!

We’ve all been there before. A little nibble of something savory. A lick of something sweet. And pretty soon, we’ve downed a full sleeve of Girl Scout Cookies.

Put down the Thin Mints and let me tell you something really important about yourself: you are not a failure because you like sweets. You can still lose the weight and eat a cookie.

You may gasp and look at me suspiciously, but it’s true.

One of the craziest things that we do to ourselves when we set out on a weight loss journey is to make certain foods taboo. “I can’t eat birthday cake. I’m on a diet.” “I’ll just buy ice cream for the kids (and stare at them envious of their metabolism). I’m on a diet.” “I’ll just drink my coffee black with anger in it because I’m on a diet.”

You know what should actually be taboo? The word “diet.”

You don’t have to make any food taboo. You just have to trim the excess!

And do it gradually or your brain is going to rebel. Make small incremental changes on one or two things at a time so your body can adjust.

How? Leave the whip cream off the drink! This is a change you might notice the first couple times, but you will soon get used to it.

The best part? As you work your way through the day trimming excesses—but maintaining tastes that you enjoy—you won’t hate yourself when you go to bed. Why? Because it’s something you can stick with. You won’t eat grape skins for breakfast and a whole extra cheese pizza for dinner. And you won’t have the disappointment that you can’t stick with a “diet.”

Focus on what you CAN do with your new lifestyle. This is better than banning foods and considering yourself on a diet. Diet implies restriction, but a lifestyle change is a path to a healthier you.

This will help you get focused this weekend!

 

Happy autumn, don’t wait until new January first to make your resolutions, right now is the perfect time to think about rocking out those skinny jeans and festive clothes for the holiday season. I know sometimes the process of losing weight is a daunting task but stay with me and let’s do this!
My point is, committing to be fit is not easy, but it’s worth it!
Here are some tips to boost your energy & confidence before working out:
     1. ) Make use of media
  • Listen to great music, watch motivational workout videos, listen to fitness   podcast
  • Look at some fitness inspiration online (I love fitness Instagrammers!) #fitspo #fitlife
     2. ) It’s all in the mind
  • Always think that You Can Do It and You Will Do It!
  • Food, caffeine, supplements
  • It’s basic. Our bodies biggest source of energy comes from the food we eat!
  • Eat energy-boosting foods
  • You may also take safe energy supplements or multivitamins
  • Grab a cup of coffee or anything with caffeine before hitting the gym
  • However, a word of caution, caffeine only offers a temporary boost of energy. Some may feel a crash after the effect of the caffeine wears off.

The Real Cost of Being Just “Fine”

 

Recently, a friend told me that her husband always knows something is up when he asks how her day is and she responds with “fine.” That’s a big red flag for him! He knows he’s about to hear a story about something that happened at work or with the kids that flipped her world upside down. He also knows that she’s trying to hide it. She doesn’t want to unload on him, but he knows that something is wrong.
What about when you say it? When someone asks you how your day is or how you feel, do you answer “fine”? Better yet, ask yourself this: do I want to just say that I’m fine, or do I want something better?

What’s better? I’m awesome, great, fantastic, beautiful, amazing!

Here’s the thing: when we say that we are “fine,” it gets us stuck in complacency.

We sacrifice the chance to say, “I’m fantastic!” 

Let’s look at some parts of your life that you can upgrade from fine to amazing, so you can be honest about how you really feel—
  1. Eating — Ever a sticking point with those changing to a healthy lifestyle, eating habits can sometimes make or break us. You don’t have to get what everyone else is getting. “That’s fine.” You don’t have to get the “healthiest” thing on the menu if it’s not something you would like. No! Make a conscious effort for “great”! What will fuel your body healthily, satisfy your hunger, AND taste delicious? Making healthy, conscious decisions about what we eat is FABULOUS! You are in control of making your body and mind feel good, and that’s always better than “fine.”
  2. Exercise — It can be so hard to fit this in among all our other obligations! Trust me, I’ve heard a lot of excuses for not exercising. Think about it this way: exercising isn’t just for weight loss. It’s for maintaining a healthy heart. It’s for toning muscle. It’s massively important to combat things like high cholesterol or osteoporosis. AND it’s great for your mood. Really! Use exercise as an opportunity to change your day from “fine” to “fantastic,” because of all the wonderful things it is doing for you, even if you have to work in short sessions throughout the day. You are choosing better! Some exercise is better than nothing at all.
  3. Rest — Few adults get adequate rest. It seems to be the last thing that we think about, the thing we do when all the other things are done. But, it is another crucial component to feeling better than “fine.” When our bodies are rested, we feel refreshed. Our brains are functioning! We can address our daily tasks with more ease. It can keep us from feeling frazzled and stressed. Tonight, really think about how much rest makes you feel good, and make a point of going to bed on time. Allow that time for yourself, and keep it sacred. It’s part of refilling your cup so you can pour into others. No one can pour from an empty cup! Rest will start you with a better outlook so you can easily move the needle from “fine” to “beautiful” . . . because isn’t that what you want life to be?

Don’t lose the momentum {Videos Inside!}

 

Being a weight loss coach, I have a fair share of my frustrations hearing people tell me that they have no time to exercise.
We all know that it is just another excuse that people use to avoid working out. And end result is, I still get complaints from the same people about their struggles in losing weight. Well, that’s so predictable.
Enough is enough.
When you want the best results in regards to your fitness and health then you have to give 100% effort and commit to be fit. Let’s do this!
At the Zone event yesterday in Palm Springs I was so inspired by Jesse Itzler who spoke about pushing your limits! He said we all leave 40% on the table and our mind gives out before our body! He learned more about pushing his limits by “Living With a Seal” Jesse’s best selling book!
 
It’s all about doing your part and no excuses.

Stop Sabotaging Your Fitness Goals Just Because It’s The Weekend

 

I know you deserve a great weekend! 

And for most people, treating themselves to a great night out with friends  and good food and some booze always sounds perfect!

But the question is, do you want to sabotage your fitness & diet goals just because you feel you deserve a fun night? 

And even worse for some of us, this fun night turns into consistent fun nights thinking we will start over on Monday. Just stop.
I know I’ve been there!! Stop sabotaging yourself!
