Why Body Weight and Exercises Are The Bomb

I did an FB live all about why body weight and exercises are the bomb.
In case you didn’t catch it on FB, here you go!
ONE PAN ROASTED GARLIC PARMESAN CHICKEN AND VEGGIES

Ingredients

1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 tablespoon dried parsley
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon EACH: garlic powder, onion powder
1 teaspoon paprika
Seasoned salt and pepper
1 large lemon, juice and zest
5 tablespoons olive oil, separated
1 heaping cup (5 ounces) baby carrots, sliced in half
1 and 1/2 heaping cups (1/2 pound) baby red potatoes, sliced
1 large yellow onion, coarsely chopped
1 head (1 heaping cup) broccoli, chopped
1/2 tablespoon minced garlic
Freshly grated Parmesan cheese
For Meal Prep: 1 cup quinoa or rice
Optional: 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Instructions
  1. Dab the chicken breasts with paper towel to dry. Remove any fat and then chop the chicken into 1/2 inch pieces. Place in a medium sized bowl.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the parsley, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, seasoned salt (to taste; I use 1/2 teaspoon), and pepper (to taste, I use 1/4 teaspoon). If desired, mix in the 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes. Stir to combine and then take half of the seasoning mix and add to the chicken with TWO tablespoons olive oil and the zest and juice of 1 lemon. With your fingers, toss the chicken, olive oil, lemon, & seasoning mix until the chicken is well coated. Cover and place in the fridge for 30 minutes (while everything else is being prepped and cooking).
  3. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a very large baking sheet with parchment paper for easy clean-up. Halve the baby carrots lengthwise, Halve the baby red potatoes (or quarter for large ones), and coarsely chop the onion (halve it, halve each half, and then cut each half into 2 or 3 sections — see pictures for general size).
  4. Place the carrots, red potatoes, and onion on the prepared sheet pan. Add another 2 tablespoons olive oil and most of the remaining seasoning mix (leave 1 teaspoon). Toss with your hands to generously coat everything and place in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, chop the broccoli into bite-sized pieces. Remove the pan from the oven and toss the veggies and section them off to one half. Add the broccoli and minced garlic to the other half and toss with the last tablespoon olive oil and last teaspoon of seasoning mix. Toss to coat and then toss the broccoli with the other veggies and section to one half of the tray.
  6. Remove the chicken from the fridge and drain off ALL the liquid (I like to pick up the chicken with a cupped hand and shake it off a few times). Add to the sheet pan and ensure the chicken pieces are separated (not on top of each other) so they can fully cook.
  7. Return to the oven and cook for another 15-20 minutes or until chicken registers 165 degrees F and vegetables are to desired tenderness. While the sheet pan is in the oven, change to a HIGH broil and cook for 1-2 more minutes (adds a nice char :)) Watch it carefully to avoid burning.
  8. Remove from the oven and top with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and enjoy immediately or use for meal prep.
To meal prep:
Prepare 1 cup uncooked quinoa or rice according to package directions and then separate it evenly into 4 separate containers. Place an even amount of the sheet pan dinner into each container. Cover and place in the fridge. Enjoy by warming in the microwave.

Did you watch the Olympics? You deserve a medal!!!

Did you guy’s watch the the Olympics? I have and all I can say is “wow.” These athletes have the most incredible stories and I’m in awe by their strength and determination. 
This made me think of you actually. Look at how far you’ve come in this journey to a healthier and better life. I know it hasn’t been easy and there’s always more work left to do but, like these amazing individuals, you’re mind is set. You’re ready to go get that medal. Tips for a Successful & Healthy Meal Prep

Choosing healthy meals every day can be challenging if you do not have a plan.
It’s hard to control if you are surrounded by so many tempting food choices! So how do you make sure that you eat well and control your food intake this week?
One way is to prepare your own food! This can be easily accomplished by sacrificing a few hours of your Sunday afternoons.
Here are some tips to help you successfully prepare all your meals for this week:
Set aside prep time.
Plan, shop & prepare meals. Allot at least 2-4 hours of your day.
Make important decisions.
Determine how many and which recipes you will choose. Do you want a different meal each day or are you okay with repeating meals?
Choose recipes with overlapping ingredients to cut costs and waste. 
Pay attention to how many servings each recipe makes.
Plan 3 balanced meals for each day of the week and include snacks.
A balanced meal is heavy on the veggies, contains lean protein and also small portions of whole grains.
Make a grocery list and go shopping. 
Having a list and a plan is a great way to prevent the impulse buying of high calorie foods.
Have all of the necessary tools at hand. 
Make sure you  have all the tools you will need to prepare and portion your meals.
Make a cooking schedule.
Slow cooking meals should go in the oven or crockpot before you start on those simple quick cooking dishes. 
Pre-portion foods as you prepare them.
Pre-portion foods so that you don’t have to worry over how big of a slice or piece you should eat.
Package individual portions of snacks and meals in separate containers for easy grab and go eating. 
Label each container with what’s inside and/or what day of the week you want to eat it. 
Only refrigerate what you will eat by Wednesday and freeze the rest. 
You can thaw a meal in the Fridge on Wednesday night to eat on Thursday night. Raw vegetables and boiled eggs can stay in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Smart women, foolish choices.

I’m feeling triggered lately and I want to share this because it may help you.
I have talked to a lot of smart, amazing women lately who are doing well in their careers, have happy families and great friends, yet, no matter what they do, they cannot get a handle on one thing…
Their weight!
And it’s sad because it honestly keeps them from enjoying the parts of their lives that ARE working out.
They know they want to look different, be thinner, feel better, but something else always ends up being more important.
So I’m curious, if your friend or sister or child had a goal, what would you tell them? To settle? To just give up and accept things as they are?

Or would you tell them to go for it?
And what about you?

I don’t have time to be healthy

I’ve been talking to a lot of women lately, and I keep hearing the same story over and over again and let me just say, I am totally frustrated on your behalf!
We are all smart enough to know how important it is to stay fit and healthy, especially at our age, but it seems like every piece of advice requires a total life overhaul that NO one has time for. 
It breaks my heart to hear from women who are so successful and have everything they want . . . except the dream body to go with it. 
I’ve heard all the struggles. I know it can be tough to squeeze in workouts. And I know you’ve tried everything from the grapefruit diet to Zumba to the Thighmaster (do they make those anymore?!) to build muscle and burn fat. And when we don’t see quick results, our enthusiasm fizzles. I know because I’ve been there and I’ve worked with tons of women who have been there, too.

The truth is, we waste so much time chasing all these crazy get fit fast ideas instead of focusing on what’s really important. But the truth is, none of that stuff is sustainable because it requires too much of one thing that no one likes to do
SACRIFICE!
That’s why once you hit 40 or 50, you’ve got to make it a lifestyle that you LOVE, not a fad that fades in a week.
Having time always seems to be the problem, right? I mean, you hear about everyone planning out all these healthy meals for their whole family and doing yoga, warming up, running, lifting, cooling down, visiting the sauna and finally taking a nice long shower so they can look like super models. Who seriously has time for all that? It’s discouraging.
But it doesn’t have to be!
You can look in the mirror and feel good about yourself. It can take as little as 15 minutes a day! The key is figuring out YOUR personal triggers. YOUR personal exercise plan that fits into your crazy schedule. You can’t hop on a cookie cutter one size fits all trend and hope to get and keep the weight off.
You need it to work for YOU.
This is an unusual approach for me, but I’m going to open up this email to take your questions! Not one of my health coaches, me personally answering your question! Just tell me the number one thing you struggle with and I’ll give you at least one strategy you can try to start feeling better about the body you live in!

Hey are you a weekend warrior?

Some of you have really busy schedule trying to juggle between work, family, social events and other sudden activities during the weekdays.
But that should not give you an excuse to slack off and totally let go of working out!
If you cannot exercise every day, working out at weekends still gives real benefits.
You just have to unleash that weekend warrior in you! Aim to have any of the following workouts:
  • 30min run (with lots of sprint intervals)
  • 45min spin class on Saturday and Sunday to neutralise stress
  • 2.5hr bike ride
  • 45min swim
  • 30min home workout, alternating 10x
  • squats, 10 x press-ups, 10 x burpees
  • and 60sec planks
  • 45min Zumba or Boxercise class
  • 40min group circuit, alternating
  • between 45sec of squats, side planks,
  • burpees, Russian twists and skipping
  • 60min gym boot camp
There are many more others you can do at home and squeeze into your weekend schedule!

CHANGING your LIFE can’t be CHEAP!

I’d like to have a heart to heart with you today. This email may be a little longer, so please just stay with me.
I get the pleasure of speaking to women regularly that are FIRED UP, and honestly a little fed up too.
They are ready to lose weight, get super fit and toned, get off the diet rollercoaster and feel beautiful and confident in their body. Sounds like you?
I’ve been thinking a lot about “slip-ups” lately. After all the holidays – parties, and tons drinks. They look all cute innocent but, seriously , don’t fall for it. One of those beauties will set you back a few hundred calories at minimum. 
Anyway, there’s this one time in particular that comes to mind. A little over twenty years ago this month, my sister got married. If you remember the 90’s, you can imagine what the dress looked like! I’m honestly not sure what designers were thinking in this decade but the cut, fit and fabric of this thing horrifyingly resembled the famous frock worn by “Carrie” in the 90’s remake (minus the blood!)

My point is this dress couldn’t flatter Kate Moss on a thin day. And my sister asked me to wear it. Mind you, I was about 15 pounds heavier than I am today. I worked out a ton and I thought I ate pretty healthy. But, for some reason, that number never budged.

Looking back I remember the pain of checking the scale every morning, I can clearly point out what I did wrong. But I remember the guilt and the shame and feeling like a miserable failure. Ugh. Horrible memories. I know now though that my fault was I’d try so hard during the day and I would deprive myself of any real nourishment. I’d snack a lot on sugar-packed protein bars, crackers and just about anything that claimed to be “low fat.”

BUT THE NUMBERS ON THE SCALE NEVER, EVER MOVED.

I had this wedding coming up. It was my sister’s big day and I need to fit in (and rock) the dress she chose for me. Desperately, I tried supplements and diet pills. I even did some cayenne pepper cleanse thing. But then, I tried it on again and I finally got it to look okay (whew). I remember sucking my breath in so deep while my mom tugged on that zipper for me. It finally fit. I was on the road to finally figuring it out. I wore my best smile and it was genuine because I loved my sister but something was missing: my confidence.
It wasn’t too long after this day that I decided to make a real change. A permanent one. I recognized carbs (and eating them mostly at night) to be the enemy here. And, like I do with any aggressive enemy, I took the mother down. I continued my strenuous workout routine but I cut out all complex sugars. I can’t begin to even tell how much this helped.
My point is – I get it. I understand what it’s like to struggle for balance. Finding the time and money to achieve long-term results isn’t easy. But it’s possible and I want to show you how. With my five step formula, there will no longer be that pain of trying to feel comfortable in your own skin.
Stop coming up with so many reasons why you shouldn’t take care of yourself. These reasons seem to make sense…
“I don’t have the time.”
“I don’t have the money.”
“I’ve tried it all before and it won’t work for me.”
“I have to take care of my family first.”
I want you to know I understand, because I’ve been there.
I moved to Los Angeles without much money or any idea how I would make it, no trust fund or real strategy.
But what I did have was PASSION, and I was not going to be a victim and let my life just be so-so. Or just ok.
Eff that! I wanted a life that was AMAZING!
AND I was willing to do whatever it took to make that happen.
Here’s the scoop: I prayed, I meditated, I worked and I invested in myself before I felt ready.  
The universe works that way. In order for your life to change you can’t be cheap with yourself.
Cheap with time, with attention or with money. Because in my experience, it never is really about the reason… it’s just that we are afraid.
And I want to ask you:
What would YOU do if you weren’t afraid?
 
Who would you allow yourself to BE?
This contrast is what is keeping you stuck.
Stuck feeling less than in your body.  Stuck feeling like your best years are over.  And stuck feeling like you’ll never be able to loose those last 10lbs. we all know that losing weight isn’t easy, I know I’ve been there, I can help.
